Black Caviar, the greatest Australian sprinter of the modern era, may well have left these shores after her heart-stopping success in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last mount, but her compatriot Ortensia will bid to land another huge prize for racing fans ‘Down Under’ when she flies the Aussie flag in the Group1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on July 14.
The Paul Messara-trained Ortensia was a strong fancy to get the antipodean challenge off to a winning start at Royal Ascot when sent off favourite for the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, but after showing tremendous pace through the first four furlongs of the contest on the far side of the track the seven-year-old mare faded in the last 150 yards, eventually coming home ninth of the 22 runners behind the surprise Hong Kong-based winner Little Bridge.
The daughter of Testa Rossa had previously got the better of the smart Sole Power to land the valuable Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in late-March on Dubai World Cup night, having ended her season back home with a Group 1 success in the prestigious Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot (Australia) in November.
Despite her defeat at the royal fixture last month those who bet on horse racing on Bet Victor reckon that Ortensia will put up a bold show over the extra furlong of the July Cup and were reportedly delighted with the way the winner of 11 of her 31 outings moved in a recent racecourse gallop under Michael Hills.
Bookmakers offer as big as 16/1 about the veteran sprinter downing the likes of strong favourite Bated Breath (3/1) and the fascinating potential contender Excelebration, (one of the outstanding milers of recent times if you leave Frankel out of calculations), and it would come as no surprise to see this gutsy and talented sprinter go very well as she bids to redeem her reputation.
Don’t forget, you can get great odds on racing at Bet Victor.
